What changed
The notices cover West Anaheim Medical Center and Shasta Regional Medical Center in California, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, and Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago. National Nurses United said workers are seeking contracts that address staffing, recruitment, retention, and patient-safety concerns.
The union reported that workers issued ten days’ notice after strike-authorization votes. Becker’s Hospital Review independently confirmed the four facilities, the multistate scope, and the planned September 3–4 window. This is a planned action, not a completed strike or hospital closure.
What it means for you
At the affected hospitals, the next practical questions concern scheduling, reassignment, handoff expectations, and who will provide care during the action. Use official employer communications and your union’s instructions for your own shift; a strike notice by itself does not tell you whether bargaining will produce a settlement first.
If you are considering a role at one of these hospitals, ask when the relevant contract expired, which classifications are bargaining, and how orientation will be staffed during any labor action. New graduates should also ask whether preceptors could be reassigned. An orientation start date has less value if the support structure behind it is unsettled.
The larger signal is the coordination. Four hospitals in three states are moving on the same dates, turning local negotiations into a system-level workforce test.
What to watch
The decisive dates are September 3 and 4. Before then, watch for a tentative agreement, a withdrawal or modification of the notices, facility-specific contingency plans, and any independently confirmed changes to staffing or contract terms. Until one of those occurs, describe the walkouts as planned.
