Neighborhoods+Residential life in Lakewood centers on established family neighborhoods like Westgate in the southern portion of town, complete with neighborhood retail at Westgate Plaza, as well as lakeside properties surrounding Lake Carasaljo near Georgian Court University. Newcomers often discover that a substantial portion of the township's gated enclaves—such as Four Seasons, Leisure Village East, Lions Head Woods, The Fairways at Lake Ridge, and Covington Village—are strictly 55+ active-adult communities. Because of this age restriction, healthcare professionals seeking non-restricted neighborhoods frequently look at open-age subdivisions in town or commute from neighboring Ocean County communities such as Brick Township (particularly near Mantoloking Road) and Point Pleasant Boro.

Getting around+Driving is the primary mode of travel for medical workers traveling across Ocean and Monmouth counties, with Route 9 (River Avenue) serving as the main north-south commercial and commuting artery alongside County Line Road (Route 526). Traffic congestion can be dense along Route 9 and central crossroads during morning and afternoon peaks, driven by extensive school bus transit and commercial delivery activity. Intra-neighborhood walkability is practical in compact residential hubs like Westgate and central shopping zones, but hospital shifts require personal vehicles.

Outdoors+Lakewood offers exceptional outdoor access, anchored by Lake Carasaljo with its scenic 4.5-mile perimeter trail used for jogging, cycling, fishing, and warm-weather paddle boat rentals. The 149-acre Pine Park off County Line Road provides wooded walking trails, campgrounds, picnic pavilions, and courts for tennis, basketball, and handball. In addition, Ocean County Park—occupying the historic estate grounds once owned by the Rockefeller family—features expansive open lawns, playgrounds, and shaded walking paths.

Lakewood is one of the most distinctive and rapidly growing municipalities in New Jersey, combining an exceptionally youthful population with a unique cultural fabric anchored by Beth Medrash Govoha, Georgian Court University, and a historic downtown. For relocating nurses, the town offers great outdoor relief after long shifts, from the 4.5-mile walking loop around Lake Carasaljo to 149-acre Pine Park and the historic grounds of Ocean County Park. Entertainment includes Jersey Shore BlueClaws minor league baseball games at ShoreTown Ballpark and performances at the historic Strand Theater. However, settling here requires navigating important housing and commuting realities: many gated developments like Four Seasons and Leisure Village East are strictly 55+ communities, leading working professionals to focus on neighborhoods like Westgate or look to nearby towns like Brick and Point Pleasant Boro. Heavy peak-hour traffic along Route 9 and County Line Road demands planned travel times, but in exchange, Lakewood delivers low property crime rates, rich community warmth, and immediate access to the Jersey Shore.
