Overview

South Operating Room (SOR) is a Level 1 Trauma Operating Room (OR) and is the main OR at OHSU. It is a large, primarily adult inpatient OR with 25 suites.

Function/Duties of Position

The primary service lines include but are not limited to: Cardiothoracic, General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Colorectal, Bariatric, Gynecology, Oral Maxillofacial, Neurosurgery, Spine, Orthopedic, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Transplant, Urology, Vascular, Gender Affirmation, and Trauma. SOR provides intraoperative care and surgical services for populations ranging from early adolescent to geriatric populations with occasional pediatric patients. This includes care across the acuity spectrum from elective to emergency surgery.

This surgical location supports approximately 14,000 cases annually or 50 cases per day Monday through Friday and 16 cases per day, on both Saturday and Sunday. SOR is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week and has an elective schedule 7 days per week in addition to supporting acute urgent and emergent care.

2 years RN experience in an Adult Operating Room, OR 180+ clinical hours in an Adult Operating Room, OR 2-years experience as a Surgical Technologist in an Adult Operating Room

Portland is less one city than a stack of neighborhoods split by the Willamette, and a relocating nurse will feel that on day one: Nob Hill and the Pearl are walkable and loft-Victorian; Alberta Arts is colorful and still relatively reachable; Sellwood-Moreland and Alameda are quieter, historic, and family-scaled, with Alameda called safer than 90% of the city. What is genuinely distinct is the pairing of a James Beard–dense food-cart and coffee culture with nature that is actually close—Washington Park’s International Rose Test Garden in town, Multnomah Falls and Gorge hikes, Mount Hood skiing, and the coast inside about 90 minutes—plus no sales tax. The honest tradeoffs are a long gray winter (SAD comes up constantly), visible homelessness and drug activity concentrated downtown even as residential neighborhoods a few miles out feel quaint and safe, steep income taxes, and housing that still runs from Goose Hollow condos near $300K to Laurelhurst near $1 million. Transit, bikes, and walk scores are real assets; Beaverton-inbound traffic is not.
