About this role

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 5:30am-2:00pm

The Day Surgery Charge Nurse is responsible for overall patient care in the Day Surgery Unit. This involves both preadmission and day of surgery care. This nurse is responsible for delivery of patient care utilizing the age specific nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation.

This nurse collects and records patient information including medications and medical/surgical history. This nurse will review pre-operative testing and patient history, and perform physical assessment, reporting abnormal findings and/or patient issues to the physician and/or operating room personnel. This nurse uses the nursing process to provide patient education regarding pre-operative preparation and instructions, day of surgery processes, and post-operative instructions.

Job Specific

  • Participates in the safety management and infection control programs. (EF)
  • Demonstrates effective leadership of the Day Surgery Unit by utilizing appropriate professional nursing and management skills. (EF)
  • Determines staffing and scheduling patterns to meet the needs of patient care. (EF)
  • Serves as a resource and role model to Day Surgery personnel. (EF)
  • Efficiently and correctly use the hospital computer system to collect and document patient information, i.e. medications, medical/surgical history, patient assessment. Utilizes down-time forms when necessary.
  • Compiles the surgical chart, assuring physician orders are present.
  • Performs order entry in computer, utilizes down-time process when necessary.
  • Correctly and completely carries out physician orders and documents accordingly.
  • Understands the policy of Informed Consent.
  • Ensures informed consent is complete, matching physician’s order and scheduled procedure. Performs clarification for any discrepancies. Witnesses signature.
  • Communicates with physician and/or physician offices as needed to report abnormal pre-testing results, patient concerns, and order needs/issues.
  • Reinforces pre-surgical patient teaching and instructions
  • Coordinates the aspects of pre-admission, admission, pre-operative care, post-operative care and dismissal of patients in the unit.
  • Provides direct patient care and exercise judgment in delegating aspects of patient care appropriately to licensed and unlicensed staff members.
  • Performs phlebotomy and specimen collection utilizing aseptic and/or sterile technique as warranted.
  • Administers medications according to facility standards and requirements.
  • Transports patients to and from the unit as needed.
  • Participates in professional development of self and staff to enhance patient-focused nursing practice, age and population specific to the nursing unit.
  • Assists with the budgeting, ordering, cleaning, and /or storage of equipment and supplies for the Unit.
  • Facilitates maintenance of equipment and unit by completing work-orders as necessary.
  • Assists with the orientation competencies of new personnel and annual evaluations

Hospital

  • Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
  • Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital’s Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations.
  • Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
  • Performs within his/her professional Scope of Practice at all times.

Minimum Requirements

Educational requirements

Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Experience

Required: At least one (1) year of experience in the care of ambulatory surgery patients or 3-5 years of med/surg experience.

Preferred: Some management experience

Special skills and abilities

Required: Phlebotomy; Computer – Keying/Typing; Microsoft Word

Licensure / certification

Requirements

Required: Currently registered with the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners; Basic Life Support Certification - BLS
