Operating Room Charge Nurse

Staff Management & Support

Provide direction, delegation, and performance feedback to OR team members. Facilitate team communication, including shift huddles, updates, and handoffs. Mentor new staff and support ongoing clinical education and competency development. Participate in staffing decisions, including break/lunch coverage, assignments, and adjusting personnel based on surgical needs.

Quality & Compliance

Promote and uphold quality metrics, patient safety initiatives, and regulatory standards (AORN, CMS, Joint Commission). Monitor and report safety concerns, including near misses, sentinel events, and equipment failures. Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and policy updates. Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to procedure count policies and timeouts.

Communication & Collaboration

Act as the communication hub between surgeons, anesthesia, pre-op/PACU, sterile processing, and other team members. Support conflict resolution and foster a respectful, collaborative surgical environment. Communicate changes in workflow, case priorities, or urgent needs promptly and professionally.

Qualifications

Required

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license. Minimum 2–3 years of perioperative nursing experience in an acute care operating room. Current BLS (Basic Life Support). Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage multiple priorities. Demonstrated leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills.

Physical & Working Conditions

Fast-paced surgical environment with extended periods of standing and frequent movement. Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, and surgical equipment. Ability to lift, push, and pull equipment or patients per facility policy.
