Position Description

The mission of Anoka County Community Corrections is Working to Build a Safer Community. The department has an immediate opening for a Registered Nurse, Correctional Health, who is responsible for providing medical services to individuals housed in a juvenile detention center (the Anoka County Juvenile Center). This setting serves adolescents sentenced to a period of incarceration, creating a unique opportunity to support both individual health and long‑term community safety. We have both secure and non-secure programs; the non-secure setting also serves youth involved with social services.

The Registered Nurse, Correctional Health delivers direct, patient‑centered care to an incarcerated population, including assessment, triage, medication administration, and management of a wide range of health needs. The nurse collaborates with medical providers, mental health staff, and corrections personnel to ensure continuity of care within the facility. Emphasis is placed on health education and connecting patients with community resources to promote successful reintegration.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site position. Interviews will take place the week of September 21st, 2026, for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Pay & Benefits

  • Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 36: $85,363 to $119,496 ($41.04 to $57.45 per hour).

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Juvenile Center, located at 7555 4th Ave, Lino Lakes, MN 55014.
  • Expected work hours include evening shifts and rotating weekend coverage based on business needs. The schedule consists of four 10‑hour shifts per week, with weekday shifts running from 12:30 to 11:00 p.m., and weekend shifts being any 10‑hour shift as part of an every‑other‑weekend rotation.

Job Duties and Responsibilities These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Registered Nurse, Correctional Health.

  • Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet the psychological, physical, and mental health needs of inmates.
  • Perform assessments of inmates in settings such as intake/booking, health assessments and administering Mantoux, chronic care, medical unit, and emergencies throughout the facility.
  • Assess sick calls/Kites including Alcohol (CIWA) and Drug (COWS) withdrawals.
  • Review and assess prescribed medications brought in by inmates, coordinate and administer medication and treatment to inmates.
  • Verify inmate medication list with pharmacy and call site provider for orders to initiate as directed.
  • Arrange for additional health care, including appointments for dental, medical, psychological, laboratory and other treatment modes.
  • Implement nursing care and medical orders in a knowledgeable, safe, and responsible manner.
  • Maintain all medical records related to health and medical screening and medical treatment administered to inmates while incarcerated.
  • Train correctional officers and staff regarding medical procedures.
  • Promote and demonstrate effective communication skills.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree.
  • At least two years (2,080 annual hours) of job-related experience.
  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota.
  • Successfully pass driver’s license background check.
  • Must have valid driver's license and vehicle available for business use.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, health care, or closely related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working with underserved populations.
  • Job-related experience in a correctional health setting.
  • Job-related experience in a clinical setting.
  • Job-related experience with adolescents.
  • Experience supporting individuals with mental health needs.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, correctional and detention institutions, field offices, courtrooms, offender'/clients' homes, hospitals and schools, and various community settings depending on assignment.
  • Work activities may require contact with uncooperative, angry, and sometimes challenging clients depending on assignment.
  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness.
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
  • Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, and handling/carrying medical equipment.
  • Regular lifting of 0-25 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to medical equipment.
  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious agents, toxic or caustic chemicals, airborne particles, fumes, or other hazards is possible while performing essential duties.
