The Pre-Op/Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) nurse is responsible for all aspects of patient care after surgery. This includes monitoring vital signs, administering medication for pain and nausea, updating and educating the family, and transferring to our extended care unit or discharging to home.
This is a 3/12 position working 12-Hour shifts on Mon, Tue, and Wed from 0700-1930. Closed on weekends and holidays.
Must be *fluent in Spanish*, including Medical Terminology, in order to communicate effectively with patients and their families.
*Position Duties*
a) Follows the standards of care for pre-op and post-op nursing care including monitoring patient vitals; heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and respiration, as well as managing the pain and nausea that often follow anesthesia.
b) Participates in staff development, quality assurance and other clinical staff meetings.
c) Prepares, administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications.
d) Obtains operation histories, as well as interpreting various test results including labs, clearances, EKGs, etc. Along with performance of EKG and other tests as needed.
e) Admits patients to facility. Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner.
f) Assists patients with post-op ambulation and initiates patient education plan as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation.
g) Maintains current knowledge of accreditation standards specific to the facility as well as state and federal regulations; demonstrates understanding of legal implications of nursing actions.
h) Assists in managing inventory of supplies, materials, medications, and general station in the Pre-Op, PACU area.
i) Provide assistance to clinical staff, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed.
j) Position Duties may change at the discretion of the Clinic Director to meet the needs of Seven Oaks Surgery Center.
*Position Characteristics*
PACU nurses must be able to think critically, make confident decisions in a fast-paced clinical environment and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Must present professional image; possess strong work ethic; be well organized; strong interpersonal communications skills; maintain the confidentiality of patient and employee information; must be detail oriented.
*Education and Experience*
a) Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
b) RN with active license in California.
c) One year of Med/Surg, ICU, ER, or PACU experience preferred
d) ACLS and BLS certification
e) Bilingual Skills (Spanish)
f) Must be highly skilled in verbal communication, problem – solving, and organization.
*Lifting Requirements*
This position requires periods of extensive sitting and phone work. It also requires other repetitive motions (e.g., bending, stooping, twisting, walking, standing, reaching overhead, pushing or pulling). Manual dexterity is required, as is the ability to concentrate on detail in the midst of other activity.
