Teaching Hospital Environment: We provide student opportunities for aspiring Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs).
About The Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Unit
We are a 21-bed unit for patients 50 years of age and older. Our unit is one of only three acute psychiatric centers in Oregon that specialize in geriatrics.
Our focus is psychiatric stabilization. Treated conditions include:
Depression and other mood disorders
Anxiety
Psychosis: delusions and hallucinations
Self-destructive or threatening behavior due to a psychiatric illness
Holistic, Trauma-Informed Care: We include patients, their families, guardians, and/or healthcare representatives in the plan of care. Our approach includes group sessions with Occupational Therapists and Social Workers, music therapy and spiritual care visits, and daily visits with the assigned Nurse and Psychiatrist or PMHNP.
Assessing Care Needs: Our Occupational Therapists support the activities of daily living and perform cognitive assessments to determine if a higher level of care is needed. Recommendations are shared during care conferences with families or loved ones.
Discharge Planning: Each patient is assigned a Social Worker to assist with discharge planning and the coordination of outpatient community resources. The average length of stay on our unit is approximately two weeks.
Position Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) for the Inpatient Psychiatry unit functions include: providing direct care and support for patients and their families, working with the interdisciplinary treatment team in a collegial manner, and at times taking charge of the unit and making decisions on the delivery of patient care during the shift.
Main Responsibilities
Participates in the admission and orientation of patients and families to the program.
Performs assessment/data collection in an ongoing systematic manner.
Administers routine and PRN medication as ordered and transcribes orders.
Documents in an accurate and concise manner, using BIO charting and charts to the behavior.
Implements patient care based on identified priorities.
Provides care appropriate to the age of patients served.
Supervises and coordinates patient care activities of coworkers/technical staff.
Assists in the maintenance of safe and therapeutic milieu.
Identifies patient/family learning needs and implements appropriate measures to meet these needs.
Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings and in-services.
Attends and participates in designated treatment team meetings on matters concerning the patient and/or family
Participates in quality improvement activities.
Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Oregon
American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS
One (1) year or more of recent psychiatric and/or long term care
