Neighborhoods+Young professionals on local Reddit threads most often land in Tower Grove (including Tower Grove South), Shaw, Lafayette Square, Soulard, Benton Park, the Central West End, The Grove, Dogtown, and University City—walkable brick neighborhoods with restaurants and nightlife. The Central West End sits beside Forest Park with grand historic homes; Soulard and Lafayette Square are denser rowhouse districts. Families and a quieter suburban texture cluster in Kirkwood, Webster Groves, Olivette, and Niche’s 2026 metro #1, Brentwood (small-town feel, park paths, easy central commute), plus Ballwin and closer-in Affton. Extra Space’s 2026 safety-and-budget list also flags Boulevard Heights, Lindenwood Park, North Hampton, and Princeton Heights as lower-cost city options with a more residential, parks-and-bungalows feel.

Getting around+These sources do not name hospital campuses, parking garages, or transit lines, so treat hospital-door details as something to verify on a site visit. What they do say: the region is generally easy to drive, with “wild drivers” as a recurring local complaint. Affton is about 20 minutes to downtown in good traffic; Ballwin about 30 minutes. Brentwood is described as central with a fairly easy commute and walkable park paths. Healthcare is listed among the metro’s popular industries, so many nurses will be on those same city–suburb road corridors rather than a documented rail commute.

Outdoors+Forest Park is the outdoor and civic heart: 1,300 acres, larger than Central Park, with room to walk, bike, and hit free museums and the zoo in one outing. Laumeier Sculpture Park is the most-named “hidden gem” sculpture-and-green-space destination; botanical gardens, public murals, and flourishing city parks show up in visitor roundups. Greenway projects are expanding trail-style commuting and recreation. The city sits at the Mississippi–Missouri confluence, so river identity is real even when daily life is more park-path than water. Walkable suburbs such as Brentwood sell park paths as part of the residential package. Seasonal outdoor life runs through those parks and trails rather than a single beach or mountain scene.

St. Louis rewards nurses who treat it as a patchwork of towns, not one skyline. Young professionals cluster in the Central West End, The Grove, Shaw, Benton Park, Soulard, and University City; families look to Brentwood, Olivette, Kirkwood, Webster Groves, and Ballwin (Rockwood and Parkway schools). Downtown is roughly 20 minutes from Affton and 30 from Ballwin in good traffic. The costs are real: city crime and vacant stretches, a city–county social divide, tough summers, spring pollen and fall ragweed, aggressive drivers, and a yearly personal-property tax on cars. Choose the block first. Then The Hill’s toasted ravioli, Soulard Farmers Market, City Museum, CITYPARK soccer, and Laumeier Sculpture Park make the move feel larger than the paycheck.
