Living in Brookhaven
Known affectionately as 'Ole Brook' and historically nicknamed the 'Homeseeker's Paradise,' Brookhaven offers healthcare professionals an authentic small-town Mississippi environment anchored by Interstate 55 and U.S. Highway 51. Life here moves at a relaxed cadence, centered around a picturesque downtown featuring historic architecture along South Jackson Street, public art in Cherokee Alley, and performances from the Mississippi School of the Arts and Little Haven Theater. Shift workers benefit from an easy, predictable driving commute and straightforward access across Lincoln County. Days off can be spent mountain biking the wooden ramps of Mt. Zion Trail or camping among the hardwoods at Lake Lincoln State Park. The dining scene leans on local bakeries, Southern barbecue, and neighborhood Mexican spots, balanced by community traditions like the Exchange Club Fair. Relocating nurses should note clear trade-offs: public transit is nonexistent, nightlife and commercial entertainment for younger adults are very sparse, and residents voice concerns about localized crime. For those seeking quiet rural surroundings or traditional Southern hospitality, Brookhaven offers a grounded, community-focused base.
