Neighborhoods+South Scottsdale (ZIPs 85251 and 85254) is the walkable Old Town side—historic streets, nightlife, galleries, and urban condos, and the more realistic in-city entry for young professionals. Central Scottsdale (85250, 85257) is established family territory with green belts, lakes, and resorts. North Scottsdale (85255, 85258, 85259, 85262) is high-desert luxury: gated DC Ranch, Troon, Grayhawk, Gainey Ranch, McCormick Ranch, and Silverleaf, with DC Ranch homes often $1.2M–$3M+. Reddit locals say the cheapest Scottsdale-adjacent option is the Tempe border at McKellips Road; still under 45 minutes are Sun City, Apache Junction, and Maricopa.

Getting around+Scottsdale runs about 31 miles north–south and only 5–7 miles wide, so most trips are a north-south drive on Scottsdale Road or Loop 101 rather than a short crosstown hop. Old Town to Phoenix Sky Harbor is about 15 minutes, Central Scottsdale to downtown Phoenix about 20 minutes, and North Scottsdale’s Troon area 40–45 minutes to the airport; DC Ranch is roughly 30 minutes to Sky Harbor via Loop 101, and south-to-north on Scottsdale Road is 35–40 minutes. These sources do not name hospital campuses, bus or light-rail lines, or parking rules; Facebook movers simply warn that roads are busier and a car is the assumed way around.

Outdoors+The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is the city’s backyard: about 30,000 acres and more than 225 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and desert walking. Named climbs and parks include Camelback Mountain and Pinnacle Peak Park; golfers point to TPC Scottsdale and Troon North. Hot-air balloon operators include Rainbow Ryders, Firebird Balloons, and Arizona Balloons, with jeep and ATV tours over the Sonoran landscape. Lost Dutchman State Park and Goldfield Ghost Town sit near Apache Junction. Pool season is effectively year-round; serious trail time is best in the cooler half of the year.

Living in Scottsdale
Scottsdale stretches about 31 miles along the McDowell Mountains but only 5–7 miles wide, so neighborhood choice is a north-south lifestyle call. South Scottsdale and Old Town offer walkable nightlife, galleries, and condos; Central has green belts, lakes, and family streets; North—DC Ranch, Troon, Grayhawk—is gated luxury and golf. The draw is the 30,000-acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve, 225-plus trail miles, Camelback, Pinnacle Peak, TPC Scottsdale, and Taliesin West, with 314–330 sunny days. Tradeoffs are cost and heat: medians near $850,000 and rents around $2,500–$3,150, while North estates run into the millions. Many nurses look at South or Central Scottsdale, the Tempe line at McKellips Road, or 35–45 minute suburbs such as Apache Junction, Sun City, and Maricopa. Loop 101 puts Old Town about 15 minutes from Sky Harbor; Troon is 40–45. November–May is prime outdoors; June–September means 110°F days and air-conditioning. Locals call it clean and social, and flag heat, prices, and busier roads.
