Weather is the other gift: mild winters that rarely freeze, little rain from spring through fall, and hundreds of sunny days, so the Guadalupe River Trail and Municipal Rose Garden become year-round habits. The tradeoff is severe. Average rents around $3,300 and homes near $2 million mean a nursing wage in the $80k–$150k range buys a smaller, farther, or shared life than it would almost anywhere else. Expect congested freeways, a 29-minute average commute that lengthens when housing pushes you outward, thin light rail, visible homelessness, and a high-stress, high-cost grind. Come for the job, the food, and the outdoor access; stay only if the paycheck still works after rent.
