Neighborhoods+Downtown West Palm Beach is the walkable high-rise condo belt around Clematis Street, CityPlace/The Square, Flagler Waterfront, and the Okeechobee business district, the one pocket where skipping a car is realistic. Just south, 1920s historic districts—South Side, El Cid, Flamingo Park, and SoSo—have historic houses, old trees, and the highest price per square foot; Northwood mixes historic bungalows with an arts strip of shops and galleries a short trip downtown. For lower prices and parking, Villages of Palm Beach Lakes offers low-rise apartments and two-bedroom condos listed near $200,000, while the Water Catchment Area is quiet single-family streets with garages and green space. West of I-95 toward Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, and Loxahatchee, newer construction, two-car garages, and more square footage take over; Facebook and Reddit relocators also name Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Lake Worth, Delray, Boca, and even St. Lucie County if a longer commute is acceptable.

Getting around+Most residents drive: the average commute is 20.4 minutes, 82.4 percent go by car, and only 2.1 percent use transit, so own a car unless you commit to downtown. North-south movement is I-95 and Florida's Turnpike; Okeechobee Boulevard and Southern Boulevard run east from the western suburbs into downtown, and west-side neighborhoods use I-95 exits 68 through 71 for Southern Boulevard, the airport, Okeechobee, and Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard. Downtown is where Brightline (260 Quadrille Plaza Drive), Tri-Rail (203 South Tamarind Avenue, with free parking and a free downtown shuttle), Palm Tran buses, a free downtown trolley, and Circuit Shuttles meet; Tri-Rail also offers a free Palm Tran connection to Palm Beach International Airport, while garages and meters tighten on Kravis Center event nights. Named hospital employers in the city include Good Samaritan Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center.

Outdoors+Daily outdoor life in the city is the Flagler Drive promenade, the Great Lawn, and Intracoastal views—not an in-city ocean beach; the Atlantic sits about five minutes east in the Town of Palm Beach. Mounts Botanical Garden is a core local attraction, Peanut Island is a standard weekend outing, and the Water Catchment Area is the neighborhood called out for green space and quiet streets. County beaches, preserves, parks, and catamaran trips fill the rest of the year, with summer heat and humidity cutting how much time people actually spend outside.

Living in West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach is the mainland county seat on the Intracoastal, five minutes from Atlantic sand that belongs to the separate Town of Palm Beach. The fork is geography: downtown around Clematis Street, CityPlace/The Square, and Flagler Drive is where Brightline, Tri-Rail, Palm Tran, and a free trolley make a car optional; west of I-95 toward Wellington and Royal Palm Beach you buy garages, yards, and a roughly 20-minute drive. Nurses will find Good Samaritan Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center among local employers, and housing as the expensive line—city median sale about $527,000, downtown about $761,000, plus windstorm and flood insurance. Northwood bungalows and Villages of Palm Beach Lakes undercut Flagler Waterfront and El Cid; eat on Clematis or at Howley's, or chase Guanabanas in Jupiter. Tradeoffs are eight humid months, hurricane season as routine, winter snowbird traffic, and wages that lag housing. The payoff is waterfront walks, Kravis Center and Norton Museum nights, SunFest, and a downtown that stays out after dark.
