Living in Pocatello
Historically known as the 'Gate City' for the natural Portneuf Gap that ushered pioneers and railways into the Pacific Northwest, Pocatello is a welcoming high-desert hub set against rugged Rocky Mountain foothills. For healthcare workers considering a relocation, the city pairs low-stress day-to-day living with immediate access to nature. Commutes to Portneuf Medical Center rarely exceed fifteen minutes whether living in central Pocatello or neighboring Chubbuck. Off shift, outdoor opportunities are immediate: you can bike the Pocatello Foothills, run along twenty miles of paved Portneuf Greenway trails, or float the Portneuf River in summer, with quick weekend getaways to Lava Hot Springs and Bear Lake. The town's social fabric is shaped by Idaho State University and a charming Old Town featuring historic neon signs, craft breweries, and local fixtures like Buddy's. Tradeoffs are real—dining choices thin out significantly late at night, public transit is modest, and winter brings cold snows and basin inversions. However, nurses seeking friendly neighbors, easy driving, and uncrowded mountain recreation will find Pocatello an authentic, grounded home base.
