The new-grad rate is at the floor

New-grad-welcoming postings start about $8,900 lower. The posted ceilings sit in the same place as everyone else's.

A first offer that pays less than what experienced friends make can feel like a verdict. It's a training-cost number. The posted ranges say it doesn't follow you up the band.

People talk about the first year in months: 3 for small wins, 6 for functioning, 12 for comfort. Pay is a separate clock. Off orientation is when the training-cost story gets thinner, because nobody is paying a preceptor to shadow you.

The floor moves. The ceiling doesn't.

The median posted floor on new-grad-welcoming postings is $78,368. On postings that state an experience bar, it's $87,285. That gap is about $8,900.

Posted floors move. Ceilings don't.

The ceilings don't follow. Median posted ceilings sit within about $700 of each other, around $110,000, whether the posting welcomes a new grad or asks for two years. Employers price the entry. They don't price a smaller room.

What off orientation changes

The justification for the lower floor is the training year. Off orientation, that justification is weaker. The number doesn't always move on its own. You have standing to move it.

  1. Pick up the diffs you can work.

Nights, weekends, charge when it comes. Those raises don't need a negotiation.

  2. Ask the band question at your first review.

"What moves a nurse up the posted range here?" A specific answer is a plan.

  3. Watch internal transfer postings.

An internal move reprices you without resetting seniority.

  4. Read the open board once a quarter.

Run a posted offer through the analyzer so you know your number.

A big sign-on isn't a raise. What sign-on bonuses tell you is its own read. The short version: the bonus buys the employer time, and it usually buys it from you.

What nurses earn, by state and specialty.

Next: the 2-year mark, in numbers.

Notes

  1. Median posted salary floors and ceilings by new-grad policy: Nursing Mastery job corpus, read 14 August 2026. Priced active nursing postings: welcoming n=345, silent n=3,559, gated n=572.
  2. Postings whose salary fields fall outside a $40,000–$300,000 annual band are excluded, because source data mixes annual, hourly, and cents-denominated values. These are advertised ranges, not reported earnings.
  3. Live pay for specific roles appears in the open-roles module below, drawn from the same corpus.
