Do you need a Social Security number to take the NCLEX?
Discussion starterThe question
This one confuses a lot of nurses trained abroad, because the answer people repeat online is wrong for some states and right for others.
If you tested without an SSN, which board did you apply through, and when did the SSN finally matter for you?
The conversation
1 replyThe exam itself doesn't need one. Whether you can apply without one is up to the state board you apply to, and some boards ask for an SSN on the licensure application while others don't.
That's why many internationally educated nurses apply to a board that doesn't require it, test, and then move their license to the state they'll work in once they have a job offer and the documents that come with it. Check the application page of each board you're considering before you pay any fees, because requirements change.
What would you tell them?
