The tradeoff is real distance — about five hours to Sioux Falls, Bismarck, Billings, or Denver — and a rental market that has stayed tight because housing demand has outpaced supply since 2010. The local economy itself holds fairly steady on Black Hills tourism, a wide trade radius, agriculture, and Ellsworth Air Force Base.
