Living in Holland
Holland combines the scenic serenity of Lake Michigan coastal living with an active, distinctly preserved community character. For relocating healthcare workers, the city offers an appealing everyday pace: sandy afternoons at Holland State Park under the shadow of the Big Red lighthouse, more than 155 miles of regional cycling paths, and a picturesque downtown centered on 8th Street that remains fully walkable all winter thanks to an expansive heated snowmelt sidewalk network. Culinary life blends local institutions like New Holland Brewing Company and deBoer's Bakkerij with craft spirits and European bakeries. While local healthcare clinics and regional practices are easy to navigate via US Route 31, nurses commuting northeast along Interstate 196 to major Grand Rapids facilities like Corewell Health face a 30- to 35-minute drive that can stretch during winter lake-effect snowstorms. Housing demands a premium compared to inland communities like Zeeland, and evening entertainment leans toward quiet taprooms rather than bustling nightlife. Nevertheless, for nurses seeking top-rated schools like West Ottawa and an outdoors-focused lifestyle along the lakeshore, Holland represents a balanced and enduring West Michigan home base.
