Duties

This position is located in the Intensive Care/Coronary Care (ICU/CCU) department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses KVMH and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua’i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities. The ICU/CCU department is designed to provide advanced, life-saving care for patients experiencing critical illnesses or severe cardiac conditions.

These units are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to monitor and support vital functions, including respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems. ICU/CCU staff, consisting of highly trained physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, deliver round-the-clock care, administer complex medical treatments, and respond promptly to emergencies. The primary goal of these units is to stabilize patients, manage acute conditions, and facilitate recovery while offering compassionate support to patients and their families during challenging times.

The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) III is responsible for independently developing and implementing nursing care plans for patients across one or more clinical services within a hospital, institution, or clinic; providing nursing care treatment and educational services; assigning and directing the work of lower-level registered nurses and nursing assistants; serving as the charge nurse of a patient care unit during an assigned shift; and performing other related duties as assigned. While primarily assigned to the ICU/CCU department, this position requires cross-training and floating to other units within the facility to assist based on operational needs. The RPN III is also expected to work rotating shifts, including extended hours, weekends, and holidays.

The RPN III reports to the RPN V (Unit Nurse Manager), position number 59229, or their designee. THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently.

In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants are required to provide evidence of education, certification, and licensure.

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.

Experience

Six (6) months of professional nursing work experience. SELECT

Of the six (6) months of professional nursing experience required, six (6) months must be in intensive care/cardiac care services.

Certifications

Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are required at the time of appointment. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the AHA and NIH Stroke Scale certifications must be obtained within six (6) months of employmentCurrent certifications in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) are highly recommended. LICENSES: A current license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. A current State of Hawai’i type #3 driver’s license is preferred. DESIRED

KNOWLEDGE OF: Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social, and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; thorough knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing. ABILITY TO: Apply nursing theory and practices to plan and provide nursing care; recognize, interpret, and evaluate symptoms of patients' conditions and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff, and employees; prepare comprehensive nursing diagnoses and nursing care plans; and plan and direct the work of lower-level registered nurses and nursing assistants. FAMILIARITY WITH: Standards, regulations, and requirements of Medicare, Medicaid, The Joint Commission (TJC), and procedures used in the surveillance and control of hospital infections.
