Job summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care and clinical support to oncology patients under the direction or supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) or Registered Nurse (RN), consistent with Virginia Board of Nursing regulations and UVA Health policies.

Competencies

Clinical Patient Care

Obtain and document vital signs, focused assessments, and symptom screening in Epic. Prepare patients for provider visits, procedures, and treatments. Perform peripheral and port lab draws Recognize, document, and escalate abnormal findings to RN/provider. Assist with infusion workflows and patient flow. Perform venipuncture and maintain peripheral IV access per competency. Administer approved medications per scope and UVA policy. Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection per policy

Patient Experience & Care Coordination

Provide compassionate, patient-centered support Reinforce treatment plans and patient education

Teamwork

Willing to share responsibilities, support their teammates, and work together to achieve common goals. Organizes and prioritizes daily work assignments to support patient needs, the interdisciplinary team, and operational efficiency. Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care. Recognizes the importance of time sensitive issues.

Technical Competence

Uses knowledge and skills acquired through training and validation Provides clinical support under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Documents and capture charges for clinical support services rendered during the visit. Performs administrative support responsibilities as directed by a Clinic Leader.

Qualifications

Education

Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing program.

Experience

Licensure

Current Virginia LPN license. BLS certification (AHA).

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Ability to multitask and prioritize quickly. Ability to communicate verbally and in written form

Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred

Oncology or infusion experience. Chemotherapy/biotherapy competency validation. Epic experience

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

Physical demands

Physical Demand Code: Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment. This job description may not include all assigned duties.

The base compensation range for this role is $22.31 - $34.37 hourly.

Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education. Please note that the pay range does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as

  • shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
