About this role

Freedom Behavioral Lake Charles is a growing acute psychiatric hospital dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality behavioral healthcare to adolescent and geriatric patients. As we continue expanding toward a 46-bed facility, we are seeking experienced and dependable Licensed Practical Nurses to join our team through our In-House LPN Contract Program.

This is a 6-week in-house contract opportunity designed for LPNs seeking competitive contract work while becoming familiar with Freedom Behavioral Lake Charles and our clinical team. Upon successful completion of the 6-week contract, LPNs will have the opportunity to transition into a full-time position with Freedom Behavioral Lake Charles.

Nurses who transition to full-time employment will become eligible for the benefits available to Freedom employees, in accordance with applicable benefit eligibility requirements.

Position summary

The In-House Contract Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Freedom Behavioral Lake Charles provides compassionate, patient-centered nursing care to geriatric and adolescent patients receiving acute inpatient behavioral health treatment. Working under the direction of a Registered Nurse and within the LPN's scope of practice, the LPN helps maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment while supporting each patient's physical, emotional, behavioral, and psychiatric needs.

In-house contract LPNs are expected to maintain reliable attendance, fulfill established scheduling commitments, follow all hospital policies and clinical standards, and work collaboratively with nursing leadership and the interdisciplinary treatment team throughout the six-week contract period.

Geriatric Patient Population

LPNs assigned to the Geriatric Unit provide nursing care to older adults experiencing acute psychiatric and behavioral health conditions, including dementia, Alzheimer's disease, depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders.

Responsibilities include administering medications and treatments, monitoring physical and mental status, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), implementing fall-prevention and safety measures, documenting patient progress, reporting changes in condition, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary treatment team to promote stabilization, recovery, and quality of life.

Adolescent Patient Population

LPNs assigned to the Adolescent Unit provide nursing care to adolescents experiencing acute behavioral health and psychiatric conditions.

Responsibilities include administering medications and treatments, monitoring emotional and behavioral status, supporting therapeutic interventions, maintaining a safe and structured environment, assisting with crisis intervention and de-escalation, documenting patient progress, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary treatment team to promote stabilization, healthy coping skills, and recovery.

In-House Contract LPN Responsibilities

Regardless of unit assignment, the In-House Contract LPN is responsible for:

Providing safe, professional, and compassionate nursing care within the LPN scope of practice. Administering medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and established nursing standards. Observing patient behaviors and physical and mental status and reporting changes in condition.

Utilizing therapeutic communication and supporting crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts. Maintaining patient safety and supporting a structured, therapeutic treatment environment. Assisting patients with activities of daily living and other nursing care needs as appropriate.

Collaborating with RNs, physicians, therapists, social workers, nursing leadership, and other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Completing required clinical documentation accurately and within established timeframes. Maintaining reliable attendance and fulfilling all scheduling requirements established under the In-House LPN Contract.

Complying with all Freedom Behavioral Lake Charles policies, procedures, orientation requirements, competencies, and clinical standards throughout the contract assignment.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and/or experience required

Education

Certification from approved Practical Nursing Program License: Licensed as an LPN to practice in the State of Louisiana.

Experience

One-year LPN experience is required. Previous experience with behavioral health and geriatrics is strongly preferred.
