About the Role

MedOp Solutions is seeking a Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse for a 12-hour night-shift travel assignment at a large acute care hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This 28-bed unit cares primarily for medical and observation patients with an average stay of approximately 36 hours . The unit has frequent admissions and discharges, making this an excellent opportunity for an RN who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

Candidates should have 1–2 years of acute care experience . First-time travelers are welcome.

Unit Information

  • 28 beds
  • Average patient stay: approximately 36 hours
  • Approximately 2–3 admissions/discharges daily
  • Most patients are ambulatory
  • Surgical patients are uncommon
  • COVID-positive patients are rare and are tested prior to admission

Patient Population

Common diagnoses and patient types include

  • Rule-out chest pain
  • Post-cardiac catheterization
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
  • Rule-out CVA/Stroke
  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
  • Post-Interventional Radiology procedures
  • Cellulitis
  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)

Patient Ratios

  • Day RN: 1:4–5
  • Night RN: 1:6–8
  • Day Tech: 1:5
  • Night Tech: 1:9

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive Medical-Surgical and observation nursing care
  • Perform assessments and implement individualized plans of care
  • Manage frequent admissions, transfers, and discharges
  • Administer medications and monitor patient response
  • Provide ostomy and drain care
  • Initiate and maintain peripheral IV access
  • Manage applicable IV medication drips
  • Monitor patients for changes in clinical condition and escalate concerns appropriately
  • Collaborate with hospitalists and interdisciplinary team members
  • Provide patient and family education
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EPIC
  • Follow facility-specific medication administration and pain reassessment protocols

Qualifications

Required

  • 1–2 years of acute care nursing experience
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience
  • Strong IV skills
  • Ostomy care experience
  • Experience managing drains
  • Experience with admissions and discharges
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience managing common drips, including:
  • Heparin
  • Insulin
  • Cardizem
  • Amiodarone

Preferred

  • Previous observation unit experience

First-time travelers are accepted.

This unit does not routinely manage ventilators or tracheostomies.

Support Staff

  • Charge RN with a lighter patient assignment
  • Unit secretary available 24/7
  • Hospitalist coverage 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy available in-house 24/7
  • Telemetry technicians available 24/7
  • Phlebotomy support for peripheral blood draws

Floating Requirements

Travelers are first to float based on staffing needs.

Potential floating assignments include

  • Medical-Surgical units
  • Emergency Department Holding – approximately 1:4 RN-to-patient ratio

Orientation

  • 4–8 hours of New Employee Orientation (NEO) on day shift
  • Opportunity to meet with the educator, supervisor, and manager
  • One full orientation shift on the unit, or adjusted based on experience

Scheduling & Expectations

  • 36 hours per week
  • 12-hour night shifts: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Every other weekend required
  • No on-call
  • One holiday required
  • Schedules are created in 6-week blocks and typically provided approximately 2 weeks before the new schedule begins
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved; additional time requires Nurse Manager approval
  • SimpliFi Clinical Interviewing: Yes

Holiday Expectations

Holiday coverage is based on unit needs and may include

  • Christmas Eve / Christmas Day
  • New Year's Eve / New Year's Day

Fatigue Policy

All staff, including travelers, must comply with the facility's fatigue policy:

  • Maximum of 60 working hours per week
  • No more than five consecutive 12-hour shifts

Important Clinical Documentation Requirement

Strict compliance with the facility's pain assessment and medication documentation requirements is expected.

Nurses must document the patient's pain level before and after administering pain medication. Oral pain medications require reassessment within approximately one hour .

The patient's pain score must also correspond with the parameters of the medication order. If the patient's pain score falls outside the ordered range for the requested medication, the RN must contact the appropriate provider for an order rather than administering a medication outside its ordered parameters.
