The Anesthesia Department

The incoming CRNA will join a close-knit department consisting of

  • More than 4 CRNAs
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Approximately 200 cases per month
  • Approximately 10-15 births per month

CRNAs practice with flexibility and professional independence while benefiting from physician availability and a medical-supervision structure.

Clinical Case Mix

The surgical program offers clinical variety without open-heart or intracranial cases.

Approximate case distribution

  • General Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Urology
  • Orthopedics
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Additional surgical services

The remaining case mix may include pediatric and thoracic anesthesia, excluding open-heart procedures.

Clinical Responsibilities

The CRNA will provide safe anesthesia care throughout the perioperative process, including:

  • Reviewing patient histories and completing pre-anesthesia assessments
  • Developing anesthesia plans based on the procedure and the patient’s clinical condition
  • Administering general, spinal, obstetrical, pediatric, and thoracic anesthesia
  • Placing and managing epidurals
  • Performing peripheral nerve blocks
  • Performing Bier blocks
  • Placing central lines when clinically indicated
  • Managing airways and mechanical ventilation
  • Monitoring patients throughout procedures
  • Supporting postoperative recovery and safe clinical handoffs
  • Responding to anesthesia-related emergencies
  • Participating in the department’s call rotation
  • Collaborating with Anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and operating-room personnel
  • Maintaining complete and timely clinical documentation

Candidate Qualifications

Qualified candidates should have

  • Graduate education from an accredited nurse-anesthesia program
  • Current national CRNA certification
  • Eligibility for CRNA licensure and practice authority in Maine
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Clinical competency across the required anesthesia techniques
  • Experience with epidurals, peripheral nerve blocks, central lines, Bier blocks, airway management, and ventilation
  • Strong communication, clinical judgment, and teamwork skills

Experienced CRNAs are encouraged to apply. New graduates may be considered only if they can independently demonstrate the clinical competencies required by the department.
