About this role

Purpose of the Position

The Assistant Director of Nursing Services (ADNS) provides nursing leadership and management support to ensure resident care standards are established, implemented, and maintained in accordance with accepted standards of practice and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The ADNS assists in the supervision, coordination, and evaluation of nursing services to promote safe, effective, and resident-centered care.

The Assistant Director of Nursing Services is authorized to

  • Assess resident care needs and participate in hiring, supervision, and termination of nursing personnel
  • Establish and enforce resident care standards consistent with current standards of practice
  • Develop, implement, and revise nursing policies and procedures
  • Supervise and manage nursing department operations
  • Direct and evaluate resident care delivery
  • Collaborate with administration to ensure efficient and cost-effective facility operations

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct, supervise, and evaluate resident care services and initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Assess resident care needs and assist in developing individualized care plans.
  • Review Quality Measure and Quality Indicator reports to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Review pre-admission and admission clinical information to determine appropriate level of care.
  • Evaluate resident care in relation to individualized needs, physician orders, and family involvement.
  • Participate in and/or conduct resident care conferences as assigned.
  • Monitor residents’ responses to medications and treatments and recommend nursing interventions as appropriate.
  • Conduct clinical compliance audits and follow up on identified concerns.
  • Make daily nursing rounds and communicate findings to the Director of Nursing.
  • Participate in physician rounds as necessary.
  • Monitor medication administration and treatment schedules for accuracy and compliance.
  • Track and report medication errors in accordance with facility policy.
  • Assist in the investigation and analysis of incidents, accidents, and adverse events.
  • Participate in the facility Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program.
  • Prepare and present nursing quality data to the QAPI Committee as requested.
  • Implement and oversee infection prevention and control practices within nursing services.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control policies, including isolation precautions and PPE usage.
  • Ensure adequate availability and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Report occupational exposures and incidents in accordance with facility policy.
  • Oversee clinical assessment and data entry systems (including MDS-related accuracy and verification).
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and rehabilitation conferences.
  • Develop, schedule, and conduct nursing in-service education programs.
  • Assist with development and implementation of annual staff training plans.
  • Participate in continuing education programs to maintain professional competency.
  • Assess nursing equipment and supply needs and make recommendations to the Director of Nursing.
  • Oversee the CNA Preceptor Program.
  • Serve on facility committees and attend meetings in the absence of the Director of Nursing as assigned.
  • Assist with staff scheduling and ensure nursing staffing levels meet regulatory requirements.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing with employee performance evaluations.
  • Interpret facility policies and procedures for staff, residents, families, and regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Complete reports accurately and within established timeframes.
  • Counsel nursing staff and recommend personnel actions as appropriate.
  • Review and address nursing-related complaints and grievances.
  • Provide direct resident care as needed.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as scheduled.
  • Ensure resident safety and protection under supervision.
  • Uphold residents’ rights at all times.
  • Follow all facility safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness policies.
  • Maintain professional appearance, dependability, and punctuality.
  • Work cooperatively with administration, nursing staff, physicians, residents, families, consultants, and community agencies.
  • Accept assigned duties in a cooperative and professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing or Administrator.

The Assistant Director of Nursing Services will be evaluated based on the following measurable standards:

  • Clinical Quality:
  • Resident care meets accepted standards of practice with no substantiated deficiencies related to nursing services.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
  • Nursing services comply with CMS, state, and local regulations, including infection control and staffing requirements.
  • Quality Improvement:
  • Actively participates in QAPI and implements corrective actions based on quality data and audits.
  • Care Planning:
  • Resident assessments and care plans are accurate, timely, and reflective of residents’ needs.
  • Staff Supervision:
  • Nursing staff are appropriately supervised, educated, and evaluated.
  • Infection Prevention:
  • Infection control practices are implemented and monitored with documented follow-up.
  • Medication Management:
  • Medication administration processes demonstrate compliance and error trends are addressed promptly.
  • Professional Conduct:
  • Demonstrates leadership, accountability, teamwork, dependability, and professionalism consistently.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university (Bachelor’s Degree preferred)
  • Minimum of six (6) months nursing experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience in a hospital, nursing facility, or related healthcare setting
  • Current, valid nursing license as required by state law

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of nursing practices, medical procedures, and long-term care regulations
  • Ability to provide age-appropriate care to the resident population served
  • Ability to read, write, and maintain required documentation
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate nursing programs and services
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with residents, families, staff, physicians, consultants, and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to handle difficult situations with residents and families professionally
  • Willingness to seek and implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives
