What should I look for in an NP contract?
Look at when full pay starts, how the patient ramp and charting time work, who pays tail coverage and when, each side's notice period, and any noncompete. NP contract review reads your agreement, quotes the clause behind each point, and writes the questions to send before you sign.
Each note quotes the clause it comes from, so you can check it against your copy. What the agreement leaves out becomes a question to send.
Example
Employment agreement
2.1 Compensation. Employee will receive an annual base salary of $118,000, beginning once Employee is credentialed with the Practice’s major payers1. Until then, Employee will be paid $45 per hour for scheduled orientation. 3.2 Schedule. Clinic hours are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., four days per week.2 Charting not finished during clinic hours is completed on Employee’s own time3. 9.1 Termination. Either party may end this Agreement without cause on 90 days’ written notice.4 10.4 Tail coverage. If Employee resigns, Employee will buy extended reporting (tail) coverage at Employee’s expense.5
1
Pay before credentialing
The $118,000 salary starts only after payer credentialing, and nothing limits how long that takes. Ask: If credentialing takes longer than 90 days, will my full salary start anyway?
2
Clinic hours
Clinic runs 8 to 6, four days a week. Nothing here limits your own hours.
3
Charting on your own time
Unfinished charting happens after clinic, so a 10-hour day can run longer without more pay. Ask: How much protected charting time is built into each clinic day?

NP contract questions nurses ask.
Can I attach my NP agreement as a PDF?
Yes. Attach the PDF or paste the text. The review quotes the clause behind each point, so you can check it against your copy.
Who pays tail coverage when a nurse practitioner leaves?
4
Notice
Either side may leave on 90 days’ written notice, without a reason.
5
Tail coverage
You pay for tail when you resign. The clause is silent when the Practice ends the job without cause. Ask: Who pays for tail coverage if the Practice ends the agreement without cause?
The message to send
Thank you for the agreement. Before I sign, could you confirm three things: whether full salary starts by a set date if credentialing runs long, how much charting time is protected each clinic day, and who pays for tail coverage if the Practice ends the agreement without cause?
Whoever the agreement names, and it often depends on how the job ends. Many agreements say who pays when you resign and say nothing when the employer ends it. The review shows what yours says and writes the question to ask.
Can I negotiate my NP contract before signing?
Yes. Ask before you sign, while the employer is still recruiting you. The review writes a short, polite message that asks about the terms worth settling first. Have an attorney read anything that touches your pay or your ability to leave.
