Shift apps: what do you actually keep after fees and cancellations?

Discussion starter

The question

Per diem apps show a rate per hour. What lands in your account is a different number once fees come out and a facility cancels two hours before the shift.

If you pick up shifts through an app, what does a normal week look like for you? How many shifts do you claim, how many actually happen, and what's the per-shift fee on your app?

No app names needed if you'd rather not.

The way to compare an app shift to a staff job is to work out what you keep per hour you were ready to work, not per hour on the posting.

Add up a month: what you were paid, minus any per-shift fees, divided by the hours you'd blocked off, including the shifts that were cancelled. For some nurses that number still beats a staff job because of the flexibility. For others it comes out lower than the local hourly rate, and that's usually when they start looking for a part-time staff spot with app shifts on top.

Before you accept a shift, read the app's cancellation policy for facilities, not just for you. Some pay a cancellation fee to the nurse when the facility cancels late and some pay nothing. That one line changes the math more than the posted rate.

What would you tell them?
