Your first paycheck: what surprised you?

Asked by the editors

The question

The first deposit is a rite of passage and a math quiz at the same time. Taxes, benefits premiums, retirement defaults, badge and license deductions, and the gap between the offer letter number and the take home.

What surprised you most on deposit one, up or down? Numbers welcome, employer names optional.

Three lines catch most people. Benefits premiums start on a different date than pay does, so deposit one can carry a double premium or none at all. Differentials post against the schedule you worked rather than the one you were promised, so a day heavy orientation month pays base. And a percentage retirement default quietly scales with every overtime hour.

The offer letter states gross. The number that predicts the deposit is gross minus premiums minus withholding, and the payroll portal preview will show it before payday does.

What would you tell them?
