Duties and Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results.
  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes: pediatric, geriatric and the general population.

  • Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment, and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately based upon ACLS protocol.
  • Provides care to patients with compromised nutritional/metabolic status.
  • Provides care to patients requiring extensive fluid and electrolyte management.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Provides care appropriate to disease condition and age of the patient including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care as necessary.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures both in the SCU and in other departments.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensure patient confidentiality.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Ability to assess and care for patients in the post anesthesia period, both in the PACU and SCU.
  • Employee performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s/department’s ethics and compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor or upward through chain of command, the Compliance Officer, or hospital hotline.
  • Employee adheres to and practices the standards of performance outlines in the Standards of Performance handbook.

Regulatory Requirements

  • Completes annual educational requirements within the assigned time frame.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and Joint Commission regulations related to their department and, as appropriate, to the hospital.
  • Current state of Florida Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • Two or more years of recent critical care experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of critical care orientation preferred.
  • BLS certification.
  • SCU
  • ACLS and PALS required within one year.
  • PCU
  • ACLS and PALS highly recommended.
