*job summary and work schedule*

Serve as a medical resource and health advocate for students and staff in assigned schools. Responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services. The work schedule for this position is based on a 10-month school schedule and a week of back to school training. The School Nurse works *MONDAY-FRIDAY, NO WEEKENDS, and NO EVENINGS.*

*typical duties and responsibilities*

  • Provides evaluation, management, and referral for medical care of students with acute/chronic health conditions and in emergency situations for injuries.
  • Maintains all student health records; conducts immunization audits and reviews medication records to ensure compliance. Provide hearing and vision screenings for students.
  • Facilitates education, training, counseling, and guidance to students and staff in the maintenance of good health practices and disease prevention; promotes participation in healthy behaviors.
  • Serves as the liaison and facilitator for access to health care resources in the community.
  • Coordinates first aid and CPR compliance training for staff members in assigned schools.
  • Provide medical treatment and first aid to students and staff. Develop health plans, consult with physicians and parents.
  • Works under the supervision of lead RN

*minimum qualifications*

Current non-restricted TN Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse is required. 2 years or more in nursing; Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification; Nursing Diploma with Pediatric experience. Experience in a pediatric setting is preferred.

*knowledge, skills, and abilities*

  • Knowledge of evaluation plans and treatment of clients with a variety of illnesses and injuries.
  • Ability to apply current nursing research and theory to daily practice.
  • Skill in patient care and in the use of medical equipment utilized in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to plan and effectively communicate by clearly presenting healthcare-related information and responding to questions from both individuals and groups.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and productive interpersonal relationships with co-workers, patients, patient families, and school administrators.

*physical & environmental demands*

Physical Demands: Prolonged standing, occasional walking, minimal lifting in a medical office setting.

Audible Demand: Use of stethoscope to examine heart, lung, and bowel function. Operation of the phone system, verbal communication with supervisors, co-workers, patients, etc.

Visual Demands: Computer use, operation of the phone system, preparation of reports, reading handwriting, seeing short distances, completing clinical assessments, and identifying abnormal markings.

Color Perception: Use of medical equipment and for clinical assessment of medical conditions.

Environmental Conditions: Work is conducted in a typical indoor work environment with good lighting, noise, and temperature control.

Hazard: Minimal risk of injury or work-related illness due to needle sticks and/or exposure to bodily fluids, infectious disease.
