Qualifications

*

• A valid Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in Massachusetts.
• Relevant experience in pediatric care to young adult care (3-21), particularly with students who have complex medical needs
• Current CPR , AED, and First Aid certification.
• Must be able and willing to physically manage and/or lift students.

• Ability to adapt quickly and remain focused in a busy school environment.
• Trained in tracheostomy care, gastrostomy tube feedings, and catheterization
• Experience in school or residential settings

*Medical and health management:*

• *Implement individualized care:* Follow and execute the student's Individualized Health Care Plan (IHCP) and medical directives as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
• *Perform medical procedures:* Execute specialized medical procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy tube feedings, and catheterization as needed.
• *Administer medication:* Provide scheduled medication and treatment administration as prescribed by the student’s physician and document all dosages and times according to the student's care plan.
• *Respond to emergencies:* Act as the first responder for all medical emergencies involving the assigned student, following established emergency protocols.
• *Monitor health status:* Continuously observe and assess the student's physical and emotional well-being throughout the day, documenting any changes in condition.
• *Assist with daily living activities:* Help the student with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as mobility, hygiene, and positioning.
• *Manage medical equipment:* Maintain and troubleshoot all medical equipment used by the student.
• Ensures the student’s safety and well-being at all times within the school environment and during transportation (if applicable).
• Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding student health and confidentiality.

*Instructional and classroom support:*

• *Support classroom participation:* Assist the student in participating in group activities and ensure they are appropriately included in classroom instruction and social interactions.
• *Reinforce behavior plans:* Support the implementation of established classroom and individual behavior management plans to support a positive and productive learning environment.
• *Prepare the learning environment:* Help prepare necessary materials and adapt the classroom setup to accommodate the student's medical and physical needs.
• *Support transitions:* Assist the student with transitions between classes, activities, and environments, such as the classroom, cafeteria, and playground.
• *Assist with documentation:* Support the teacher with data collection for instructional purposes and assist with classroom records as requested.

*Communication and collaboration:*

• *Communicate with the educational team:* Serve as a direct link between the student's medical needs and their educational goals, communicating frequently with teachers, special education staff, and school administration.
• *Liaise with the school nurse:* Work under the supervision of the Coordinator of Nursing services, coordinating care and reporting changes in the student’s health status.
• *Communication with parents and caregivers: *Communicate with the family regarding the student's health status and any new developments as directed by the classroom teacher and supervising nurse.
• *Collaborate with external providers:* Act as a liaison with the student's external healthcare providers to ensure a consistent standard of care.

Participate in all SSEC-assigned trainings.

Supervised by the Coordinator of Nursing and the Director of the Community Program.

Qualifications

*

Must have a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts. Hold a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a college or university program in nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing. Work toward specialty certification by a nationally recognized professional nursing organization. Maintain certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and First aid from a recognized provider, i.e. American Heart Association. Must be computer literate.

Experience working with students in a school setting with academic, behavioral and/or emotional challenges, learning or developmental disabilities or autism preferred. Must be able and willing to physically restrain and/or lift students.

Responsibilities

*

The school nurse is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the school health program consistent with the guidelines, regulations and statutes governing school health. School physicians are also available for consultation.

_*Program Management*_

• Establish and manage a comprehensive school health program consistent with the guidelines, regulations and statutes of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including those governing the Departments of Education and Public Health, among others.
• Consult with the school physician, program directors and clinical staff to establish, review and revise policies, procedures and specific programs for comprehensive school health education and services.
• Organize and implement state-mandated programs such as immunization surveillance and screening programs.
• Promote positive safety practices both within and outside of school buildings, and ensures that the school has an emergency plan which is communicated to personnel and students.
• Maintain comprehensive school health records.
• Collaborate with program director and clinical staff in assessing and improving the social and emotional climate of students and faculty; involves them in maintaining a healthful school environment.
• Use population-based data collection to plan and evaluate the school health program as needed.
• Prepare regular written reports as required by Executive Director, Massachusetts Department of Public Health and other agencies, for example but not limited to; program descriptions, services provided and numbers of students served.
• Implement communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of bloodborne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal.

• Collaborate with the parent/guardian and student, where appropriate, to develop and implement an individualized health care plan for the student.
• Collect information about the health and developmental status of the student, his/her family, and significant other, in a systematic and continuous manner including health and social histories, screening results, physical assessment, emotional status, performance level and health goals.
• Develop a nursing diagnosis and care plan with specific goals and interventions delineating school nursing actions specific to student needs and coordinated with the efforts of other providers and school personnel; implements care plans in a manner aimed at improving health and educational status.
• Provide medically prescribed interventions, including medication administration (based on state regulations and doctor’s orders), and provide care to children with health needs on a daily basis.
• Respond to frequently encountered health issues, providing counseling and crisis intervention when required, for example but not limited to; adolescent pregnancy, substance abuse, death of a family member, suicide; responds to child neglect or abuse issues as required by Massachusetts statute.
• Assess student response to nursing actions in order to revise the data base, nursing diagnoses, and nursing care plan and to determine the progress made toward goal achievement; documents pertinent information in student records or confidential nursing notes.
• Provide first aid to injured children and staff; provide everyday care of acutely and chronically ill children; manages children with communicable disease.

_*Collaboration*_

• Collaborate with other professionals, team members and community providers in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and other school health activities, so as to maximize and coordinate services.

_*Health Education*_

• Assist students, families and groups to achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education and promotion.
• Identify need for health education; teaches the basic principles of health promotion and disease prevention to students and staff, using principles of learning and appropriate teaching methods.
• Coordinate in-service programs for school personnel for first aid, emergency care procedures, and current health issues.
• Act as a resource in health education to school personnel, students and families.
• Perform other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the program/coordinator.

Mandatory participation in all of the following SSEC sponsored trainings to include but not limited to:

• Successful completion of SSEC approved restraint trainings, full and/or recertification annually as appropriate.
• Maintain active CPR/First Aid certification.
• Successful completion of all SSEC approved threat assessment training.
