Position Description
Are you a nursing leader ready to shape the future of care delivery and lead a team to excellence?
We’re seeking a Director of Nursing to plan, organize, and direct all functions of the nursing department. This position plays a central role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, efficient nursing care while guiding staff, aligning resources, and driving compliance with regulatory standards. As a key member of leadership, you’ll influence strategy, strengthen nursing practice, and ensure individuals served receive the care they deserve.

- Lead, manage, and direct nursing department operations to ensure effective and high-quality care delivery
- Solve complex clinical, technical, administrative, and staffing challenges
- Oversee active treatment programming across all living areas, ensuring engagement of individuals served
- Interview, hire, and onboard nursing staff, ensuring clinical competence and professional growth
- Conduct performance reviews, manage employee relations issues, and take corrective action when needed
- Create, approve, and monitor schedules, leave requests, and overtime usage
- Develop, maintain, and communicate policies and procedures aligned with regulatory and accreditation standards (TJC, state, federal, and local)
- Manage staffing levels, department structure, and operating expenses, including implementation of new or revised programs
- Provide direct nursing care as needed in response to staffing or operational demands
- Communicate effectively with senior leadership and present on departmental performance and initiatives
What We’re Looking For
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (required)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or related field (preferred unless required by contract)
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related field (preferred unless required by contract)
Experience
- For roles outside of California, five (5) years of total nursing experience with three (3) years of managerial work experience or seven (7) years progressive leadership experience in high-acuity, secure environments, including prior supervisory and command-level roles within behavioral health or secure settings, combined with current clinical expertise as a Registered Nurse (required)
- For California-based roles: At least one (1) year of nursing supervision experience within the last five (5) years (required)
- Experience in a forensic or mental health setting (preferred)
Licenses/Certifications
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment or a valid multi-state compact license (required)
