Getting around+From Affton, driving downtown typically takes about 20 minutes in good traffic; from Ballwin it is about 30 minutes. Brentwood residents describe a central location that makes commuting fairly easy, with walkable streets and park paths and a small-town feel plus shopping. Downtown is repeatedly pitched for walkability and nightlife if the job is in the core rather than a far-west suburb. Neighborhood choice is the real commute variable: Central West End and Debaliviere Place sit beside Forest Park, while Soulard, Lafayette Square, and Benton Park sit closer to downtown.

Outdoors+Forest Park is the 1,300-acre cultural heart—larger than Central Park—with the free Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Science Center and James S. McDonnell Planetarium, plus The Muny, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, the Boathouse, and a Nature Playscape. Laumeier Sculpture Park is the other outdoor art landscape, with climbable large-scale works. Greenway projects are adding car-free corridors for commuting and recreation, and the city sits at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri, with public parks, miles of trails, and waterways that locals treat as year-round outdoor infrastructure.

Living in St Louis
St. Louis is a low-hype river city where a nursing paycheck stretches unusually far: median homes hover around $224,000, rents near $1,390, and housing runs about 23% below the U.S. norm. The payoff is architectural neighborhoods—Central West End’s grand homes beside 1,300-acre Forest Park, Soulard and Lafayette Square brick rowhouses, Tower Grove and Shaw—plus free world-class institutions (the Zoo, Art Museum, History Museum, and Science Center) that most cities charge for. Eat on The Hill (toasted ravioli, Provel pizza) and South Grand (Vietnamese); catch cheap Cardinals tickets at Busch or City SC at CITYPARK; climb City Museum’s rooftop bus. Tradeoffs are real. Violent crime and a deep city-county split mean you pick a neighborhood, not St. Louis, and population loss can leave even pretty blocks feeling empty. Young professionals cluster in the Central West End, Tower Grove, Soulard, and Lafayette Square; families often choose Olivette, Brentwood, Kirkwood, Webster Groves, or Ballwin’s Rockwood and Parkway schools. Affton runs about 20 minutes to downtown, Ballwin about 30. Crime has fallen about 10% year over year, but ratings still vary block by block. Choose the block as carefully as the job.
