Position Overview The School Nurse provides support in addressing the health needs of students; assisting in implementing the school health program; and providing appropriate care and/or referral for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students. Administer first aid and medication to students according to district policy and procedures. Essential Functions Provide direct professional nursing care to students, including first aid, illness, and injury care, using clinical decision-making within the nursing scope of practice. The School Nurse administers prescription and over-the-counter medications in compliance with South Carolina law, provider orders, and district medication policies; maintain accurate medication documentation and secure storage. Respond appropriately to medical emergencies. Provide nursing care to students with chronic illnesses, such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, and severe allergies in alignment with provider orders. The School Nurse develops, implements, and evaluates Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with special healthcare needs. Participate as a member of IEP and Section 504 teams as needed for students with special healthcare needs. Conduct required student health screenings and create a safe environment for the students. Implement infection control practices and manage communicable disease situations according to South Carolina Department of Public Health guidance and district procedures. Complete and maintain appropriate student health documentation and reporting. Train and supervise designated unlicensed school personnel to perform approved health related tasks in accordance with the South Carolina Board of Nursing Advisory Standards; provide oversight and consultation when nursing care is delegated. The School Nurse serves as a positive liaison among students, families, school personnel, healthcare providers, and community agencies. Duties may include frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting and moving of equipment or materials weighing upwards of 40 lbs. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications That Set You Up For Success Degree in nursing. Current Registered Nurse licensure (RN) from the South Carolina State Board of Nursing. Current CPR/AED required. The incumbent in this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check. Preferred Qualifications That Set You Up For Success 2+ years of school health experience preferred. First Aid Certification. Must have the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone; and the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
