OR shoes are their own category and nobody warned me

Devin in the OR

The question

Everything recommended in nursing school assumes you are walking miles. I stand nearly still on a hard floor for hours instead, and it turns out those are different problems with different answers.

What has worked in the room: something with actual arch support rather than cushioning, and a second pair so one is always dry.

Anyone else in a mostly standing role. What did you land on, and did the compression socks help or were they just hot?

Different constraint on my unit and it might be useful to somebody reading. Nothing with laces, nothing that can be grabbed, and quiet soles matter more than I expected at night.

So the answer is genuinely specialty specific, which is not how the question ever gets asked in school.

Standing still is the worse one, agreed. What helped me was an anti fatigue mat where I could get one, and shifting weight deliberately rather than locking out.

Socks were hot for the first week and then I stopped noticing. Would not go back.

What would you tell them?

Answer from what you have seen. It posts without your name.

A person reads every answer before it appears — usually within a few days.
