Left the hospital at eighteen months and the guilt was the hardest part

Indira in home health

The question

Went to home health. The work suits me far better and I am not going back.

What surprised me was not the transition, it was how much apologising I did on the way out. Two people told me I was wasting my training. One asked if I had tried harder.

If you left the floor inside your first two years, what did you tell people, and did the guilt fade or did you just stop mentioning it?

Moved shifts rather than settings, so a smaller version of the same thing, and got a smaller version of the same comments.

What I say now is that I moved to where I am useful, and it ends the conversation because it is not defensive and there is nothing to argue with. The guilt went when my sleep did.

Stayed, and I still think the people who said that to you were talking about themselves. Wasting your training is what somebody says when they are wondering about their own exit and have decided not to take it.

The question I would want asked is whether the work suits you, and you answered that in your first line.

What would you tell them?
