Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Nurse Manager, the Registered Nurse provides nursing care and health education to students in coordination with other members of the Health Services team, acts as a liaison for the department, the Center for Student Wellness, and the Winthrop community, and assists with the clinic’s administrative functions.
Functions as a nurse specialist in applying the nursing process:
Assesses, counsels, educates and makes decisions regarding disposition of student health concerns.
Refers to the appropriate provider students in need of medical care outside the nurse’s scope of practice.
Follows applicable standings orders and protocols as appropriate.
Possesses and maintains a working knowledge of nursing scope of practice and clinic operations.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of commonly used medications, immunizations, lab tests, treatments and procedures.
Team Collaboration And Professional Development
Functions effectively as a member of the nursing team by promoting teamwork through group process, decision making and communication.

Actively contributes to the overall functionality of the Health Services clinic by performing non-clinical, administrative tasks as needed or assigned.
Maintains excellent communication and teaching skills.
Handles stressful situations in a professional manner.
Remains current on nursing and leadership skills.
Clinical Safety And Compliance Responsibilities
Demonstrates understanding and adherence to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines for healthcare workers.
Maintains a safe and clean clinical environment.
Ensures all clinic equipment is in good working order and keeps a log of regular equipment checks, maintenance and cleaning, when assigned.
Completes annual lab proficiency training.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in nursing, a three-year diploma in nursing, or an associate’s degree in nursing and a valid, unencumbered South Carolina or multistate compact registered nursing license. Current, unexpired American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
Functional ability to apply all aspects of nursing care to a diverse, college-aged patient population.
Skilled in interviewing and triaging patients.
Capable of making decisions regarding disposition of care.
Proficient in performing basic medical procedures required in an urgent care setting.
Able to handle stressful situations professionally.
Demonstrates initiative and can work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Possesses sufficient technical skills to perform job duties at a high level.
Effective in establishing and maintaining relationships with patients, students, co-workers, faculty, staff and the general public.
Strong organizational, interpersonal and teaching skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Basic computer skills and experience with electronic medical records.
