Position Summary

This is a unique opportunity to join the Neonatal Escalation Safety Telemetry (NEST) Program, a 24/7 remote monitoring center staffed by experienced Labor & Delivery RNs. The NEST RN remotely monitors fetal heart rate tracings for obstetric patients across UMMS hospitals, identifies concerns, and collaborates with bedside teams to support timely escalation and patient safety. The role also serves as a clinical resource and mentor for L&D teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Remotely monitor and interpret fetal heart rate tracings.
  • Identify and escalate concerning fetal patterns using established protocols.
  • Validate findings in the EMR and communicate with bedside teams.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for L&D nurses.
  • Support evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Participate in education, peer review, and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Active Maryland RN license
  • Labor & Delivery nursing experience required
  • Strong fetal monitoring interpretation skills
  • Experience with electronic fetal monitoring systems and EMR
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and clinical leadership skills

Work Experience

Education & Experience

  • BSN Required
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing is required.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years labor and delivery experience is required.
  • Demonstrated evidence of professional growth and development through at least one of the following:

a. Current and active specialty certification

b. Current matriculation or completion of a degree or certificate program (Post Baccalaureate or higher, 12 credits or greater) within past 24 months

c. Formal teaching within past 24 months (portfolios including “Formal Teaching” require a signed “Approval for Formal Teaching” document)

d. Member of a professional association board or committee within past 24 months (not a hospital committee),

e. Actively participates as a peer reviewer for a professional journal (minimum of 2/year, portfolios including “Peer Reviewer” require a signed “Peer Reviewer Validation Form”)

  • Maintenance of 20 continuing education hours /24 months.*
  • Calculated in hours such as 30 minutes = 0.5 hour. Proof of attendance is required IV.
